He didn't/couldn't/wasn't able to see/realize/understand the danger/risk/peril he was in. As he reached/got to/climbed up to the top, the branch/limb/twig broke/snapped/fell. Sam plummeted/fell/crashed to the ground with a loud/sharp/painful thud/sound/crash.

His New Friend

Sam was experiencing a little down. He hoped to have a new buddy to play with. One day, while he was running in the park, he noticed something interesting. It was a little being with colorful scales. Sam slowly approached the creature and asked, "Hello! What's your name?" The creature grinned and answered Sam, "I'm Lily!" And so, Sam made a new companion. They spent the rest of the day laughing together.

Sam was so happy to have found a new friend. He knew that he and Lily would be close buddies forever.
